National Bike to Work Month- Biking Around Staten Island

Moving to St. George? Enjoy All the Island Has to Offer…on Two Wheels

Living in Staten Island has many perks including an easy commute to New York City, gorgeous parks and recreation for all ages, family fun activities, relaxing beaches, and of course some exciting waterfront developments that will soon transform the St. George Waterfront.

In addition, residents (and visitors) can enjoy a number of bike paths where they can take advantage of the great outdoors on two wheels. The Staten Island Bicycling Association, which is made of up cycling enthusiasts from the island, helps to ensure that the borough’s bike paths are well-maintained and extensive. So, celebrate National Bike Month as you take in the beautiful St. George scenery. Below, we’ve compiled a list of great options where you can enjoy a pleasant ride on Staten Island:

Family Bike Ride

Gateway National Recreation Area

The Gateway National Recreation Area stretches from Queens to New Jersey and includes three geographic units: Sandy Hook, New Jersey; Jamaica Bay and Staten Island, New York City. The Staten Island segment of the park contains Miller Field as well as Fort Wadsworth, once the longest continuously manned military installation in the country.

Great Kills Park provides another tranquil bike bath within its 580 acres and provides various other forms of recreation including beaches, surfing and hiking. The National Parks Service has provided a map of bicycle paths located in the park for riders to explore the 26,000 acres of Gateway.

Staten Island Greenbelt

The Staten Island Greenbelt Multi-Purpose trail allows both cyclists and walkers. The dedicated bicycle path runs through the northwestern section of the park with a branch splitting off that connects to Historic Richmond Town and the St. Andrews Church at Old Mill Road. The Greenbelt’s bike path can be found on the city’s Bike Map.

Wolfe’s Pond Park

Wolfe’s Pond Park features a lush environment, with trails that wind through freshwater ponds and native forest of this oceanfront park. The 4-mile ride is good for beginners and families looking for an enjoyable ride through the woods but also accommodate intermediate riders.

Conference House Park

Conference House Park is the home of four historic buildings that trace the history of the borough over the course of three centuries including the Conference House. After biking through the 267-acre park featuring breathtaking views of the Raritan Bay, make your way to the southern tip of New York State (the “South Pole”). The park’s bike paths can be found on the city’s Bike Map.
