5 Staten Island Attractions You Need to See

There’s so incredibly much to explore on Staten Island! Here are just a handful of family fun activities you can do with the kids. Pick one (or two) and make some memories this weekend!

  1. St. George Children’s Museum opened in 2013 and provides a creative space to help children develop and learn about the world around them, with hands-on labs and exhibits about government, groceries, science and the arts. It is bright, colorful and just the right place for inquisitive children, offering interactive educational and fun displays involving music, the arts, broadcasting, sports, agriculture and everyday life such as grocery stores and a post office.
  2. If your children (or you) are up for refining their kickflips or 360s, swing by 5050 Skatepark, located close to the ferry. It is NYC’s only indoor skateboarding park and is also the only venue of its kind in Staten Island (the borough’s outdoor skatepark was torn down in 2011). The venue offers ramps and rails for a variety of skill levels from beginners to experts. Extreme-sports enthusiasts can enjoy obstacles, ramps and rails of every level to practice and ride on.
  3. The very exciting Staten Island Children’s Museum, a performing arts center that supports a roster of local acts and the Noble Maritime Collection, features fascinating exhibitions of maritime art and artifacts and a 1950s houseboat studio that belonged to artist and former seaman John A. Noble.  The mission of the Staten Island Children’s Museum is to nurture the creativity and curiosity natural to all children, to recognize and celebrate different learning styles, and to demonstrate vividly that learning can be fun.
  4. You can also visit the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, once a home for aged sailors, is now an 83-acre city park. This stunning tree-lined complex houses a number of impressive gardens and historic buildings where visitors can learn local maritime history and sample cultures of both Italy and China. The site is considered Staten Island’s “crown jewel”and “an incomparable remnant of New York’s 19th-century seafaring past.
  5. The Staten Island Zoo houses an extensive collection of smaller animals in their natural habitats. Surround yourself in the world of snakes and other reptiles at the Staten Island Zoo’s Fear Zone. One of the most modern reptile exhibits in the nation, the 16,000 square foot facility houses 120 species of amphibians, lizards, turtles, alligators and snakes and is home to one of the largest collections of rattlesnakes in the United States. Other highlights of the zoo include a tropical forest and the African Savannah exhibit with meerkats and leopards. And be sure to stop by the Children’s Zoo so see the barnyard setting and the new Kids’ Korral open to pet the animals.

Whatever you (or the family) are in the mood for, there’s always something fun and exciting to do on Staten Island.
