Visit Staten Island Beaches, Extend Your Summer

With the start of school days quickly approaching, make a point to extend your summer by chilling out for the day at some charming Staten Island beaches. From Fort Wadsworth to Midland Beach, check out these few highlights below and … relax a little.

Fort Wadsworth

Fort Wadsworth, which dates back to the Revolutionary War, guarded New York Harbor for more than 200 years. Visitors can explore its network of tunnels, fortresses and passageways with the help of National Park Service rangers. The 226-acre park is open to beach-goers, bicyclists, dog walkers and even public camping.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk

Starting at Fort Wadsworth and continuing 2.5 miles along Staten Island’s coast, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk provides a scenic way to travel between Fort Wadsworth and the beaches along the South Beach and Midland Beach neighborhoods. This beach offers calm waives making it a good destination for families.

South Beach

The pride of the shoreline is the South Beach Boardwalk, which stretches almost two miles! Called “The Riviera of New York City,” the recently restored Boardwalk area boasts new playing fields, fun fountains, and a clean, lifeguard-manned beach, making it a popular destination for the whole family. Located just south of the Verrazano Bridge and Fort Wadsworth, the 835-foot Ocean Breeze Fishing Pier is one of the longest in New York City.

Midland Beach

Sharing a boardwalk with South Beach, Midland Beach is the less crowded of the two. It is home to a playground, tennis courts, shuffleball courts and a sea turtle fountain. If fishing is your passion, you’ll be in good company on the Midland Beach Fishing Pier, the largest steel-and-concrete recreational pier built on the Atlantic Ocean, and a welcoming spot for beginners and experts alike. Staten Island’s first outdoor amusement park (in over a decade), Fantasy Shore is located right off the boardwalk at Midland Beach. While it may not be a major destination in and of itself, it’s the perfect pit stop on your way to or from Midland Beach. Why not take a ride on the spinning Teaside Seacups with the kids or dare them to the Verranzo Viper roller coaster!

Miller Field

Just south of Midland Beach and accessible by a bike-friendly boardwalk, Miller Field is a former military airfield, but now with over 187 acres of open space, Miller Field is home to baseball, cricket, softball, soccer fields and a bocce court. Operated by the National Park Service, Miller Field is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

So grab your towel and picnic basket and plan your trip to the beach, but hurry – many are only open through Labor Day.
