Staten Island Real Estate: New Campaign to Boost S.I. Tourism

Staten Island’s North Shore real estate landscape is seeing a renaissance thanks to the building of new attractions like the New York Wheel and Empire Outlets – the first outlet mall in New York City. Empire Outlets recently broke ground and began construction on the 350,000 square foot (of leasable space) construction project, and its developers are already gearing up for the tourism that is expected to arrive once it is finished, which could affect Staten Island Real Estate.

More tourism means great things for real estate in Staten Island, including higher property value, potentially lower taxes and a self-sustaining cycle of reinvestment and development in the area.

Tourism Campaign

BFC Partners, Empire Outlets’ developers, is setting up shop over seas in order to draw more tourists to Staten Island than ever before. BFC Partners will be working alongside the developers of the New York Wheel in places like China, the U.K. and Brazil.

“(This) is great so we’ll have employees joining employees that’ll be doing this, doing nothing but selling packages to Staten Island St. George,” said Joseph Ferrara, principal of BFC Partners.

With tourism expected to grow in the coming months and years, Staten Island real estate, specifically on the North Shore in neighborhoods like St. George, could see a rise in value. “Empire Outlets will play an important role in putting the borough on the radars of visitors from afar, other boroughs and New Jersey, as well as contributing to the economic vitality of Staten Island and NYC,” said Marty Markowitz, vice president of borough at NYC & Co.

About Empire Outlets

It was announced in 2014 that Nordstrom Rack would be anchoring Empire Outlets. Construction is slated to be completed by the end of 2016. The mall itself will be “a category-defining retail destination. It’s a beacon for designer brands, and the millions of domestic and international shoppers who crave them,” according to the official website.

About the New York Wheel

Once completed, the New York Wheel will be the tallest observation wheel in the western hemisphere. It will provide spectacular views of Manhattan. The Wheel is expected to carry 4 million people a year.
