Staten Island Ferry Will Remain Free for St. George, S.I. Residents

The Staten Island Ferry is currently free to anyone who wants to use it, but that might not always be the case.

A recent study by the Independent Budget Office shows that a tourist-only fee of $4 for use of the Staten Island Ferry would bring in $2.4 million annually, according to S.I.Live.com. This would enable residents of Staten Island to continue to enjoy the benefits of the ferry for free, while the city enjoys a significant boost in added revenue each year.

“While I am not pushing this concept — and our request to IBO was simply a matter of getting an objective analysis as to how much money could be generated with the expected increase in out-of-towners using our ferries,” Borough President James Oddo said in a statement.

One way non-residents could be charged is with the use of MetroCard turnstiles, which would be placed at the St. George Terminal as well as the Whitehall terminal in Manhattan. However, residents of St. George and the rest of Staten Island would be exempt from all charges, just as they are now.

The commute from Staten Island’s St. George terminal to Manhattan is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to travel to and from work, and for residents of Staten Island, this won’t change any time soon.
