‘See Your City’ Campaign Explores St. George, Staten Island

New York City’s tourism promotion agency is campaigning New Yorkers to explore more parts of their hometown in ads that read, “See Your City.” The spotlight shines on all five boroughs appealing to adventurous local residents. Among the neighborhoods are Harlem, the Long Island City riverfront in Queens, the Dumbo section of Brooklyn, Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx and the St. George section of Staten Island.

St. George: Sail Away From It All

The NYCgo.com messaging reads: “The Staten Island Ferry is an attraction in and of itself, but once you get to St. George Terminal, it’s worth it to stick around. St. George combines the charm of a small town with hip restaurants, bars and art galleries.”

Yes, we’re in the midst of a winter wonderland, and yes we’re definitely day-dreaming about spring. But in the meantime, Staten Island still brings enriching and fun activities for families – both residents and visitors.

• It’s way too cold to be lounging around at the beach, but the family can still have fun checking out the sunbathers on the shore. Every Sunday until March 8, the NYC Audubon sets sail on a New York Water Taxi to explore the waters of New York Harbor looking for harbor seals who are stretching out on the rocky shores of Hoffman and Swinburne islands, off the coast of South Beach and on Governor’s Island.

• Uncover the hidden mysteries (that can only be seen in the winter season) on the Greenbelt Nature Center Trail “Wintry Stroll”. This educational leisurely walk on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 2 pm is suitable for ages 7 and up.

• With the Island’s focus on improving sustainability, Staten Island continues to take care of our environment by reaching high standards of green living through low-energy, carbon-neutral developments. Soon the ground will start to thaw and the Westervelt Family and Community Gardens will be vibrant with produce.

• Right now, though, the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden has launched a seasonal series of educational, hands-on seminars to teach Italian culture enthusiasts how to locate, design and maintain traditional and bountiful Boot-style gardens. The next workshop, “Seeding for Spring: Planning Your Italian Garden”, takes place at 2 pm on Sunday, Feb. 22.

• Or, stay inside where it’s warm and learn about local science, art and history at the intimate Staten Island Museum.
