News From the St. George Waterfront Redevelopment Project

The St. George Waterfront

It has been said that Staten Island’s waterfront will be transformed with the construction of the largest observation wheel in the Western Hemisphere. The St. George Waterfront Redevelopment Project also includes a new retail complex and hotel on two sites adjacent to the Richmond County Bank Ballpark in St. George. The New York Wheel, a planned 630-foot observation wheel is expected to open for the first spin in early 2017 and once built, the $230 million Wheel project will include spacious walkways, a great lawn, a stunning view and even a lightshow. A 24-hour webcam will be installed at a lighthouse offshore, which will provide views throughout the construction.

An exciting groundbreaking ceremony (by invite-only) is being held on March 10 at Richmond County Bank Ball Park in St. George which will also mark the construction of the Empire Outlets to be completed in 2016. The Empire Outlets will be built on an almost seven-acre parcel between the ferry terminal and baseball stadium, will contain a Nordstrom Rack in the retail hub, including a hotel, eateries and other shopping. It will also have a 1,250-space parking garage.

According to NYCEDC.com, The project will connect to and complement the area’s existing waterfront amenities and other assets by striving to:

• Improve connections from the waterfront to the heart of the civic center area;
• Consider the adjacent St. George Special District and its goal of establishing a pedestrian-oriented, downtown civic center;
• Offer an improved and effective pedestrian and vehicle circulation plan, both within the Sites and at their entrances and exits;
• Bring people to existing waterfront amenities and provide new waterfront uses, including new and publicly accessible open space;
• Enrich the North Shore Esplanade, part of the long range vision for Staten Island’s North Shore waterfront; and
• Help to provide the civic hub of the St. George area and Staten Island with an enhanced “sense of place.”
